Pleasure and community service songs…..this should be easy. Wrong. Finding songs that fit under the category of pleasure was not that difficult. The difficult part was choosing the one that I loved more. All the songs I picked, except “Knocking The Boots,” represented feelings that I had in the past. Pleasure songs were easy to find because that is mainly what the artists in our culture sing about. Every time I turn on the radio I hear a song talking about sex, love, money, drinking, etc. Since community service was hard or maybe I was just over thinking what she wanted by community service songs I decided to pick songs that talked about topics that I feel are very relevant to our community. “Far Away” is a song that promotes awareness about accepting people who live alternative lifestyles. On the second season of Glee (a television show on fox) it aired a few episodes of Kurt, who is gay, getting tormented and bullied because of his sexuality. When I watch those episodes it brings me to tears. Many teens in America and I am sure in other country are being bullied for being a homosexual. If we can raise awareness that promotes stopping bullying then many lives I believe can be spared. Many people are being bullied and committing suicide because of the hurt and pain they face every day. Another community service route I wanted to explore was the racial issues and discrimination so that’s why I chose “Black or White” by Michael Jackson.
The only thing that really surprised me while doing this assignment was how hard it was to figure out what songs I could use for community service. The Hindu understanding of the four aims of life differs from what we express in American pop music is that it is not as sexual and all about material things that we tend to talk about in our music. I think we have the same understanding when it comes to community service. When our country needs to expresses issues and raise awareness the best method in my option is through music.
I definitely agree that it wasn't difficult to find songs concerning pleasure, but instead it was hard to pick which one I liked the most! There are so many feel-good songs out there, and it was so difficult to choose just one! I think it's very interesting that you related the song "Far Away" to sexuality. I've heard the song and think it's beautiful, and the fact that you interpreted it in this way makes me think of all the songs out there that can have different, and more deeper feelings rather than what it seems to be about on the surface.
ReplyDeleteyea you should watch the video. at first i thought it was a regular love songs as well but then after watching the video i think it was for her friend that committed suicide
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the pleasure aim. Sex is advertised everywhere you can possibly think of and its almost impossible to miss. In the pop culture its acceptable, basically "normal" and that's what sells, but when are we going to actually make quality music again, that promotes and cares for the community? I find it that many people, especially celebrities, do community service for recognition in the public eye and its not really from their heart's.
